About Us
Cepheid Variable is a student organization at Texas A&M university. Check out our Programs page for a list of group activities.
From the Cepheid History Book:
- Cepheid Variable came into being in the period 1967-1969, the result of science fiction fans gradually coming together and organizing. In 1969, Cepheid was a part of "Science Fiction Week," the immediate precursor to AggieCon. Annette Bristol became the first President. Because of a food fight with Harlan Ellison, the main guest, Cepheid was dissolved as a club.
In 1970, Gary Mattingly reorganized Cepheid Variable and became the second President. Cepheid Variable was a MSC committee. However, in 2004 due to 'budget restrictions', Cepheid was removed from the MSC and became a student organization under TAMU Student Activities. Because of some great leadership, Cepheid was reborn.
Cepheid Variable and AggieCon have many alumni in science fiction. Among them are Steve Gould, author; Noel Wolfman, production supervisor for Dreamworks; Jayme Lynn Blaschke, author and editor; Martha Wells, author; and Brad Foster, Hugo-winning artist.
Cepheid currently has about 300 members with some of the following diverse interests:
- Hard (or Technical) Science Fiction
- Historical Fantasy
- Live Action Role-Playing Games (LARP)

Cepheid Variable has meetings every Tuesday at 8:33 p.m. in Rudder 501 during the fall and spring semesters (except during breaks or finals). We welcome you to come and discover our particular brand of insanity at any meeting. We're very friendly and easy to get to know. Ask us what our D-names are.
Cepheid Variable isn't satisfied with just having meetings. You can find us out in the community:
- volunteering to run concession stands at Aggie football and basketball games. Whoop!
- going in a group to see a movie during one of our famous "Cepheid goes to the movies" nights.
- volunteering at conventions around Texas.
- holding workshops where writers or artists can get together and discuss styles and technique.
- attending Anime marathons in the Engineering Physics building that last all night.
- planning and operating AggieCon, the largest and oldest student-run convention in America.
- getting together and throwing parties
